A MINI PILGRIMAGE TO CARHENGE

Quirky. Fun. Unique. A monument to motoring. It’s easy to see why a visit to one of America’s most exceptional automotive museums proved to be so popular among moterers on MINI TAKES THE STATES 2016 as it passed through the state of Nebraska on day 11 of the cross-country rally.

Situated at the western edge of the Sandhills of Nebraska, Carhenge is a light-hearted homage to the automobile that was built as a proportional representation of the ancient Neolithic monument of Stonehenge, using 38 vintage American cars instead of monolithic stones. The cars were rescued from nearby farms and junk yards to be used in the monument.

Carhenge was assembled in a farm field north of Alliance, Nebraska, under the supervision of farmer and former engineer Jim Reinders, who built it in 1987 as a memorial to his father. The cars are spray painted in grey to have the appearance of stones and placed in a 96-foot diameter circle to match the proportions of the original.
