It's a Family Affair

By Tamara Warren

Prow Sarnsethsiri and her husband Chris Moy have redefined the MINI family vacation. Together with their three children Nicholas, Justin and Veronica, they are making a two-car journey to Denver in Chris’s 2010 MINI Clubman and the children’s grandfather’s 2009 MINI Convertible, originating in Concord, Massachusetts. Prow is driving her father-in-law’s car on the cross-country trip. Everyday brings something new. The kids range in age from 4 to 10, and are lively bunch.

“You have to go with the flow,” Prow said. “You have to anticipate the meltdowns.” But most of the time, the kids are taken with the next bit of fun to be had on the road. They mix and mingle with MINI owners at each stop, making the trip feel a bit more like a family reunion. Each family member has a favorite travel memory. For the youngest, Veronica, the highlight was snow cones in Kansas City, swimming pools and tall buildings. Justin was taken with the Kansas Underground Salt Museum. They all savored the Pennsylvania Dutch-style cooking on a lunch stop in Yoder, Kansas. “We couldn’t get enough of the mashed potato and pies,” Prow said.

Nicholas earned his stripes early on among the MINI owners with his definitive haircut. He has MINI wings shaved in his head. On the final day of the rally, Nicholas is already focusing on his future goals, “Can we do this rally again, Mom?” he pleaded.
